Victorian Valentine

Victorian Valentine

This lovely rich blood red flowering rhododendron blooms at Valentine's Day, thus the name. Hybridized by the late Fred Cummings of Berkeley, California, the plant has exceptionally nice rich green leaves and white tomentum on the stems. This is due to one of its parents being R. arboreum tomentosum, which has the same characteristic. The flowers open in clusters of bells, between 10 and 14 in number. Since it is a February bloomer, the cooler weather will hold the flowers for some time. Frost can damage the flowers, but most years it is untouched.

Rare Variety – This variety is difficult to find anywhere due to these reasons
·        Hard to propagate – many cultivars do not root easily from cuttings, but at a reduced rate thus making the plant rare.
·        Hard to find – these cultivars are hard to find in the first place, probably because they are hard to root from cuttings
