R. catawbiense 'Purpureum Elegans'
R. catawbiense 'Purpureum Elegans'
The purple form of the East Coast native R. catawbiense is one of the most commonly found rhododendrons in East Coast landscapes, as it is super hardy and easy to grow. The plant performs flawlessly with little attention, covering itself with an abundance of lavender flower clusters with a bit of white and yellow for accents. A burgundy blotch in the upper lobe adds drama as well. The foliage is dark-green and attractive year round. Light pruning after flowers helps to create and superior specimen. Will grow to 8 ft tall and a bit more wide in 10 years. Hardy to zone 4.
