R. decorum ssp. diapreppes 'Gargantua'

A named form of Rhododendron decorum ssp. diaprepes that is very special. 'Gargantua', named by J.B. Sttevenson in 1923, has huge frilly and highly FRAGRANT flowers. This one has  been tested and has been shown to be a polyploid. This means it has more chromosomes resulting in bigger flowers, thicker leaves and stems. The plant grows large, up to 15 ft tall and blooms in late June and into July. It has been used by hybridizers, like Marc Colombel of France to develop plants with these superior features. Our plants are seed grown, so there may be slight variations in the characterics.
