Pinus banksiana 'Uncle Fogy'

Pinus banksiana 'Uncle Fogy'

Once characterized as "bizarrely attractive collector's plant", this ground hugging Jack pine will be one of your most noticed plants over time. The plant in the photo is reported to be over 20 years old, so it is not going to take over anyone's garden. In the winter, the buds ooze resin, and this is what some say is responsible for its name, reminding the viewer of a toothless old man who drooled. It can be staked upwards, and the twisting growth may appear like an Irish walking stick. Super hardy, down to zone 2, or -40 deg F. This cultivar originated as a wild-collected seedling found in the 1960s by A.G. Johnson and later planted in the home garden of Mrs. Wylder of Richfield, Minnesota.
