Picea glauca var. albertiana 'Conica'
Picea glauca var. albertiana 'Conica'
The dwarf Alberta spruce is the most commonly planted conifer in the nursery trade today. The slow conical growth with tight uniform branching makes it keep its 'look' over time. Even old plants like the one in the UK garden are still attractive after many years. The light green juvenile foliage adds to its attractive appearance. I always thought of these as 'Humpty Dumpty Trees', as they look very story book-like. Alfred Rehder and J.G. Jack found the original plant in 1904, growing in the wild in the mountains above Lake Laggan, Alberta, Canada. Hardy to zone 4.
