Magnolia 'Empathy'
Magnolia 'Empathy'
Magnolia ‘Empathy’ is a graceful, deciduous magnolia selected for its soft coloration, elegant flower form, and dependable garden performance. It develops into a small to medium-sized tree, typically 15–25 feet tall, with a refined, upright habit that broadens with age into a gently spreading canopy. Also known as 'Xuan'
In spring, ‘Empathy’ produces an abundance of tulip-shaped blooms in delicate shades of blush pink to soft rose, often paling toward the petal edges for a luminous, watercolor effect. The flowers appear before or just as the foliage emerges, creating a striking display against the still-bare branches. Lightly fragrant and held upright, the blossoms bring a sense of warmth and quiet beauty to the early-season landscape.
The foliage emerges a fresh green, maturing into a clean, medium green canopy through summer, then taking on soft yellow tones in autumn. Like many magnolias, ‘Empathy’ performs best in full sun to partial shade and thrives in moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soils enriched with organic matter. A sheltered location helps protect the early blooms from late frosts and strong winds.
Elegant yet approachable in scale, Magnolia ‘Empathy’ is an excellent specimen for smaller gardens, courtyards, or near entryways where its gentle color and spring presence can be fully appreciated.
