Iris ensata 'Carrot Cake'

Iris ensata ‘Carrot Cake’ is a distinctive Japanese iris celebrated for its large, beautifully patterned flowers and vigorous garden performance. Blooming in early to midsummer, this striking cultivar produces broad, flat blossoms in warm shades of creamy white to soft ivory, dramatically accented by rich orange-gold signals and intricate veining near the center. The unusual color combination inspired its memorable name and sets it apart from more traditional Japanese iris selections.

Elegant flowers are held above graceful clumps of narrow, sword-like green foliage, creating a refined vertical accent in the garden. The blooms can reach 6–8 inches across, providing a spectacular display when planted in groups or alongside ponds, streams, and water features.

Like other Japanese irises, ‘Carrot Cake’ thrives in moist, fertile soil and appreciates consistent moisture throughout the growing season. It performs best in full sun to light shade and is especially effective in rain gardens, bog gardens, and perennial borders where its striking flowers can be admired up close.

Combining unusual coloration, impressive flower size, and graceful foliage, Iris ensata ‘Carrot Cake’ brings elegance and a touch of the unexpected to the summer garden.
