R. impeditum

R. impeditum

For years and years, the miniature, tiny leaved Rhododendron impeditum that has been sold in the nursery industry is actually R. fastigiatum. We were able to find some of the real R. impeditum (R. litangense) which was authenticated by Harold Greer, of Greer Gardens fame. The leaves are shorter, and a bit wider, and more green than blue-green. We are excited to be able to offer this rare plant to our collectors, as it is unavailable anywhere else. This species is super hardy, to -15 deg. F. The species R. litangense has now been renamed R. impeditum.

This petite rhododendron has leaves that are elliptic to ovate to oblong, up to 5/8" long and grows into a small, cushion-like mound.  Given the common name 'Cloudland Rhododendron' by the Chinese, it can be found growing at the higher elevations of the Chinese Himalayas in fog or clouds.  It is relatively hardy, but can be a fussy grower, requiring perfect drainage.  This plant would be happiest growing in a gravelly, barky soil on a slope or in a rock garden with a peaty, free-draining soil mix.  A bark mulch is recommended around its roots to keep in summer moisture.  If given its favorite conditions, it will flower so heavily that no leaves can be seen in April into May.  A blue or purple flowering favorite.

Rare Variety – This variety is difficult to find anywhere due to these reasons

·        Hard to propagate – many cultivars do not root easily from cuttings, but at a reduced rate thus making the plant rare.

·        Hard to find – these cultivars are hard to find in the first place, probably because they are hard to root from cuttings
