Hydrangea macrophylla 'Blue Wave'
Hydrangea macrophylla 'Blue Wave'
Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Blue Wave’ is a graceful lacecap hydrangea admired for its elegant flower form and luminous color. This deciduous shrub typically grows 4–6 feet tall and wide, forming a rounded, open habit with rich green foliage that provides a lush backdrop throughout the growing season.
In summer, large, flattened flower heads appear, composed of a ring of showy sterile florets surrounding a center of delicate fertile flowers. In acidic soils, the outer florets develop a soft to vivid blue, creating a striking “wave” effect that gives the cultivar its name; in more alkaline conditions, the blooms may shift toward lavender-pink tones. The long-lasting flowers are excellent for fresh or dried arrangements and attract pollinators.
‘Blue Wave’ thrives in partial shade, especially with protection from hot afternoon sun, and prefers moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Consistent watering is important for best performance. It blooms on old wood, so pruning should be minimal and done only after flowering if needed.
