Golden Larch - Pseudolarix amabilis
Golden Larch - Pseudolarix amabilis
Pseudolarix amabilis, commonly known as the golden larch, is a truly distinctive and elegant deciduous conifer prized for its soft texture and brilliant seasonal color. Native to eastern China, it forms a graceful, broadly conical tree over time, typically reaching 30–50 feet tall in cultivation with a layered, open branching habit that lends it a refined, almost architectural presence. Related to abies and cedrus.
Its bright green needles emerge in spring in soft, radial clusters along the stems, creating a lush, feathery effect unlike most conifers. As the season progresses, the foliage remains fresh and attractive before transforming in autumn to a rich, glowing golden-yellow—one of the finest fall displays among conifers. With the onset of winter, the needles drop cleanly, revealing a handsome framework of branches.
Mature specimens may produce decorative, rose-like cones that begin green and ripen to warm brown, adding further ornamental interest. Best grown in full sun, Pseudolarix amabilis thrives in deep, well-drained, slightly acidic soils with consistent moisture. It appreciates a sheltered site and benefits from protection against hot, drying winds.
Slow to establish but long-lived and remarkably beautiful with age, golden larch is an exceptional specimen tree for collectors and discerning gardeners, offering year-round interest and a spectacular autumn display.
