Dierama pauciflorum
Dierama pauciflorum
Dierama pauciflorum is an absolutely unique dwarf hardy dierama from the high African mountains. Pauciflorum literally means "few flowered", but what flowers they are! Delightful stubby-stemmed red-pink bells look out or upwards, unlike other pendulous dieramas, and, because of their alpine ancestry, bloom in spring well before the buds appear on other species.
Neat clumps of narrow, evergreen to semi-evergreen, grass-like foliage provide year-round texture, while graceful flower stems rise 2–4 feet above the leaves in early to midsummer. The pendulous blooms, typically soft pink to rosy-lilac, sway gently in the breeze, adding movement and a sense of tranquility to borders, rock gardens, and naturalistic plantings. Their understated beauty attracts bees and other pollinators while blending harmoniously with surrounding perennials and ornamental grasses.
Dierama pauciflorum thrives in full sun and fertile, well-drained soil with consistent moisture during the growing season. Once established, it is remarkably long-lived and prefers not to be disturbed, gradually developing into an increasingly handsome clump that rewards gardeners with dependable annual flowering.
Ideal for cottage gardens, gravel gardens, and the edges of ponds or streams, this uncommon species lends an elegant, naturalistic character wherever it is planted. Its fine-textured foliage, graceful arching stems, and delicate flowers make Dierama pauciflorum a prized addition for collectors and gardeners seeking unusual, sophisticated perennials with lasting appeal.
