Cyclamen coum - Persian Violet
Cyclamen coum - Persian Violet
Also known as 'Sowbread', 'Eastern Cyclamen, and 'Round-leaved Cyclamen.
Cyclamen coum is a charming winter- and early-spring-blooming perennial that brings welcome color to the garden when few other plants are in flower. Its delicate, upswept flowers range from bright pink and rosy-magenta to white, often with a darker marking at the base of each petal. The flowers appear above attractive, rounded, heart-shaped foliage, making an especially beautiful combination.
The foliage is nearly as ornamental as the flowers, with silvery markings and patterns that vary from plant to plant. After flowering, the plants gradually go dormant for summer, returning in the cooler months from their underground tubers.
Excellent for woodland gardens, rock gardens, under deciduous trees, or naturalizing in shady areas, Cyclamen coum prefers humus-rich, well-drained soil and partial to full shade. Once established, it can slowly form impressive colonies. This is a wonderful choice for gardeners looking for a delicate, unusual plant that provides flowers and foliage during the quieter months of the year.
