Cornus alternifolia - Pagoda Dogwood
Cornus alternifolia — Pagoda Dogwood
Graceful and architectural, Cornus alternifolia is a distinctive North American native prized for its elegant, tiered branching habit. Its horizontal, layered form creates a striking “pagoda-like” silhouette that adds structure and visual interest to woodland gardens and naturalistic landscapes.
In late spring, flat clusters of creamy white flowers appear along the branches, offering a soft, airy display that contrasts beautifully with the rich green foliage. These blooms are followed by small blue-black berries on reddish stems in summer, which are highly attractive to birds and wildlife. As the season progresses, the foliage transitions to warm shades of yellow and reddish-purple in fall, extending its ornamental appeal.
Typically growing as a small tree or large shrub, Pagoda Dogwood thrives in partial shade and prefers moist, well-drained soils. Its refined texture and layered habit make it an excellent understory specimen, where it can be appreciated up close.
