Cercis canadensis 'The Rising Sun'
Cercis canadensis 'The Rising Sun'
Introduced by Ray and Cindy Jackson. New growth has a light, Pumpkin-orange tint that distinguishes it from the uniformly green-ish-yellow color of 'Hearts of Gold'. In the heat of the Midwest and SE, it doesn't burn; that just makes it grow faster. We think you'll be amazed at its incandescent attractiveness.
Cercis canadensis ‘The Rising Sun’ is a dazzling and distinctive selection of eastern redbud, prized for its ever-changing foliage and compact, garden-friendly form. Typically growing 8–12 feet tall and wide, it forms a dense, rounded canopy that makes an excellent focal point in small landscapes or mixed borders.
In early spring, before the leaves emerge, the bare branches are adorned with clusters of rosy lavender, pea-like flowers that hug the stems—a classic redbud display that provides an important early nectar source for pollinators. As the blooms fade, the foliage begins its remarkable show: new leaves emerge in vivid shades of apricot and orange, gradually transitioning through gold and chartreuse before maturing to soft green. This continuous color shift creates a luminous, multicolored effect throughout the growing season.
The heart-shaped leaves are slightly smaller and thicker than typical redbud foliage, giving the tree a full, textured appearance. In autumn, the leaves take on warm yellow tones before dropping cleanly.
‘The Rising Sun’ thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained soil with moderate moisture. It is adaptable and relatively low-maintenance once established, with good tolerance for heat and humidity.
With its brilliant foliage display, compact size, and early spring flowers, Cercis canadensis ‘The Rising Sun’ brings vibrant, season-long interest and a touch of brilliance to any garden setting.
