Cedrus atlantica 'Pendula'
Cedrus atlantica 'Pendula'
Cedrus atlantica ‘Pendula’, commonly known as Weeping Atlas Cedar, is one of the most dramatic and sculptural conifers available for the landscape. Unlike the upright species, this distinctive cultivar develops long, cascading branches that twist, drape, and flow gracefully toward the ground, creating a living work of art. Each specimen develops its own unique character, making no two plants exactly alike.
The most available cultivar is the ‘Glauca’ form, meaning blue foliage. This one has green leaves, so does not have the ‘glauca’ designation. The soft, green needles are borne in dense clusters along the pendulous branches, providing year-round color and texture. Depending on how it is trained and staked, ‘Pendula’ can form a towering weeping specimen, a serpentine focal point, or a sprawling ground-hugging form that winds through the garden. Its architectural presence makes it an exceptional specimen plant in both formal and naturalistic landscapes.
This cedar thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, showing excellent drought tolerance once established. It is adaptable to a variety of soil types and performs best where it has ample room to display its distinctive habit. It also seems to thrive where cold winters and hot summers are the norm.
Highly prized by collectors and landscape designers, Cedrus atlantica ‘Pendula’ brings year-round beauty, texture, and dramatic form to the garden. Whether trained into a striking vertical accent or allowed to cascade naturally, it serves as an unforgettable focal point that only becomes more impressive with age.
