Boronia heterphylla - Red Boronia
Boronia heterphylla - Red Boronia
Boronia heterophylla, commonly known as Red Boronia, is a graceful evergreen shrub from Western Australia prized for its profusion of vivid, bell-shaped flowers and delightfully fragrant foliage. Its slender, arching branches are clothed in fine, narrow green leaves that create a soft, airy texture throughout the year.
From late winter through spring, the plant becomes covered with masses of pendulous, deep pink to magenta flowers that hang along the stems like tiny lanterns. The colorful blooms create a dazzling display and are often accompanied by a light, sweet fragrance that enhances their appeal. Flowering can be so abundant that the foliage is nearly hidden beneath the blossoms. Hardy for zones 9-10.
Typically growing 4–6 feet tall and 3–5 feet wide, Boronia heterophylla is an excellent choice for mixed borders, sheltered garden beds, containers, and courtyards where its beauty and fragrance can be appreciated up close. It thrives in well-drained, slightly acidic soil and performs best in full sun to light shade with protection from hot afternoon sun and drying winds.
Although somewhat particular about drainage and root disturbance, this boronia rewards good culture with one of the most spectacular floral displays among Australian native shrubs. With its elegant habit, vibrant flowers, and aromatic foliage, Boronia heterophylla brings exceptional color and charm to mild-climate gardens.
