Black Mondo Grass

Black Mondo Grass

Black Mondo Grass, Ophiopogon planiscarpus  'Nigrescens', is a very useful landscaping plant due to its black color. Rare in the plant world, black colored leaves contrast very nicely with light colored leaves, or white rocks...anything that is the opposite of black. The plants spread slowly and are evergreen in nature. The flowers appear in summer, are bell shaped and can be pink, pale violet, or white. The landscape photos are from the Bloedel Reserve in Washington State, on Bainbridge Island. This is one of the finest Japanese gardens I have seen.
