Agapetes serpens

Agapetes serpens

This huckleberry relative from the Himalayan mountains is quite a show stopper. The pendulous creamy flowers have a checkerboard of red markings, adding to its charm. Relatively tender, and hardy to zone 8, it is a good idea to grow it in a pot or hanging basket for cooler climates so it can be moved into a protected area for winter. From the base emerges long, arching evergreen branches about 3-5 feet long. The flowers appear from February through June, but sporadically other times of the year. After flowering, small lavender berries take their place.
