In Japanese, the name of this maple means "sand sprinkled" referring to a profusion of tiny, green spots that develop on the red-brown leaves in late summer. Most of the summer, the leaves are a 'bronze' color, setting it off from other plants nearby. In fall, a dramatic show of intense colors draws much attention. Hardy to zone 5.
