Golden Spanish Fir - Abies pinsapo 'Aurea'
Golden Spanish Fir - Abies pinsapo 'Aurea'
The Golden Spanish fir. Here is a perfectly pyramidal and symmetrical tree that has the stiff-needled branches of the species, but the new growth color is bright gold. In colder areas the color turns green in winter, where in milder areas the golden color persists year-round. This cultivar is not very tolerant of subzero winter temperatures. The growth rate is 4-6 inches per year, resulting in a tree that will be around 5 feet tall and 4 ft wide in 10 years. The cones produced are dark, and contrast nicely to the bright foliage of the tree. The tree grows slowly, mostly due to the lack of chlorophyll. Originating as a seedling introduced in 1868 by Adren Seneclauze Nursery in France.
