Abies balsamea 'Eugene's Gold'

Abies balsamea 'Eugene's Gold'

This bright yellow needled selection of Balsam fir was found by Greg Williams in the mid 1990's, and will make a small golden-yellow tree that is taller than wide. Typically the growth rate is 2-3 inches per year, so will make a 2-3 ft tall specimen in 10 years. The needles are finer and fluffier than those of the species. Some report that it may be best planted in some shade, although the best gold color will be in very bright light. Quite hardy, to zone 3.  Also known as 'Eugene's Yellow'.
