The silhouette of this tree is very narrow, making it not only interesting, but able to grow in a tight spot. The autumn color is a rich red-orange, adding to the effect. The relatively new introduction from Japan is quite heat tolerant, allowing it to grow in areas where Japanese maples don't thrive. In 10-15 years you can expect this tree to be about 15 feet tall, but only 4-5 feet wide. The leaves are smaller than most cultivars, come out green with pink edges. Some gardeners prune the sides of this tree to make it even skinnier. In warmer climates, it is recommended to offer some afternoon shade.
