Styrax japonica 'Fragrant Fountain'
Styrax japonica 'Fragrant Fountain'
A weeping form of the Japanese Snowbell tree. The form is very attractive as a leader will go up, but the side branches go strictly down, making a 'fountain' of leaves. The small accent tree has the same little white parachute-like flowers hanging from the branches in masses as the standard Snowbell tree. There is some fragrance, but it is not potent, and one has to put your nose to a flower to detect the perfume. Can grow in full sun, but does even better in partial shade. Fragrant Fountain Japanese Snowbell will grow to be about 15 feet tall at maturity, with a spread of 10 feet. It has a low canopy, and is suitable for planting under power lines. It grows at a medium rate, and under ideal conditions can be expected to live for 40 years or more. I have seen some specimens that were trained over an archway to walk under...very memorable! Hardy to zone 5.
