Stewartia monadelpha
Stewartia monadelpha
Considered to be a small ornamental tree, Stewartia monadelpha is also a member of the Camellia family. This makes sense when you see the white Camellia-like flowers with yellow centers. The tree will grow to be 20-25 ft tall and about as wide over time. The flowers appear in summer and attract bees. Often used in bonsai, Stewartia monadelpha is native to Japan, and is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful ornamental trees. In autumn the dark green foliage turns brilliant orange, purple and red. Each plant of Stewartia monadelpha has a different fall color. The plant shown in our photo is a 20 year old specimen, and flowers every summer. Hardy to zone 6.
