Rhododendron dendricola
Rhododendron dendricola
A Maddenia rhododendron that originates from north Burma, Assam and western China where it grows in high elevations, 4000-5000 ft, on rocks, cliffs, and in trees. Yes, I said in trees! This species is an epiphyte, which is a plant that grows on the surface of a plant and derives its moisture and nutrients from the air, rain, water (in marine environments) or from debris accumulating around it. However it will grow in barky soil just as well. Lightly fragrant flowers, white with a pink blush, come out in mid April on an evergreen shrub that grows to 5-6 ft tall in 10 years. A tender rhododendron that can only grow in zones 9 and 10.
