R. nuttallii ssp. sinonuttallii

R. nuttallii ssp. sinonuttallii

Closly resembling R. nuttallii, this subspecies  R. sinonuttallii (Maddenia ) is a large, handsome evergreen shrub or small tree with beautiful smooth and peeling reddish-brown bark. The new growth is silvery. The impressively large leaves are elliptical in shape with a deeply bulbous surface. The leaves are densely scaly. The flowers of this species are one of the most impressive in the genus. They are funnel-bell-shaped and up to 12 cm long and wide. These fragrant flowers appear in May and are usually yellow. One of the showiest plants in the genus. Can only grow in greenhouses in Denmark. Requires good drainage. Common and widespread in nature. Growing wild from the eastern Himalayas to W-Yunnan, China (and in N Vietnam?). Grows primarily as an Epiphyte or on rocks from 1200 - 3650 m. The westernmost form of R. nuttalli is smaller. H. Eiberg Hardy for zones 8-9.
