Picea pungens 'Walnut Glen'
Picea pungens 'Walnut Glen'
As the story goes, this selection of Colorado Blue Spruce was rescued from a garden center that was trying to turn the plant blue. Ha! Actually it is a Colorado Blue spruce, but with lovely golden new growth in the springtime. As the season progresses, the needles turn to a grayish blue color, frosted with golden highlights. Found originally by Greg Williams of Vermont, and named temporarily as 'Goldie', then later changed to 'Walnut Glen', where it was found. It is sometimes listed incorrectly as 'Goldie'. This tree will be 5 ft tall and 4-5 ft wide in 10 years. There are reports that as young plants the spring new growth may scorch in hot areas until well established. A very handsome conifer.
