Liriope muscari 'Big Blue'
Liriope muscari 'Big Blue'
Commonly called 'lilyturf' or 'blue lily turf', this dark-green wide blade grass is common in most all Japanese gardens. It is used to give a feeling of calm. They are often seen around water, and will have showy flower spikes of violet-purple flowers that rise above the leaves in late summer. The flowers give way to blackish berries which often persist into winter. Dense clumps will slowly expand by short stolons, making nice clumps over time. One plant will grow 12"-18" tall and expand to make a clump 24" wide over time. Originally thought to be in the lily family, but now it has been placed in the asparagus family.
