Juniperus communis 'Berkshire'

Juniperus communis 'Berkshire'

Often used in bonsai due to its dwarf and slow growing habit. This cultivar is often recommended for those wanting to try bonsai. The photos show a relatively young bonsai at the bottom right, and the older prize winner shown large. The other photo is how 'Berkshire' looks in a rock garden. The plant has small pointed leaves that are blue-green, turning plum purple with blue striations in winter, particularly in colder climates. The plant will be 12" tall and wide after 10 years if not pruned. Found in the Berkshire Mountains of western Massachusetts in the mid 1970's. Introduced by the Arnold Arboretum in Jamaica Plains, Massachusetts. Hardy to zone 3.
