Fagus sylvatica 'Purpurea'
Fagus sylvatica 'Purpurea'
Commonly called copper beech and/or purple beech. Also known as the Atropurpurea Group of Beech trees, this large growing tree has foliage that is dark purple, approaching black, generally having wavy edges. Considered a large growing tree typically growing to 50-60 ft, so is more suited to larger properties. The bark is thin, smooth and gray. The almost black foliage offers incredible contrast to lighter foliage plants. Deciduous with the leaves turning a lighter bronze in color just before dropping. For those that want a screening tree, this one is a good choice if you have the room.
