Cherry Berries Wintergreen
Cherry Berries Wintergreen
The berries on this new cultivar of Wintergreen are larger than any of the other varieties, making it one of the most decorative. The glossy evergreen leaves are glossy dark-green most of the year, but in winter become burgundy. Plant in part shade with soil rich in humus or other organic matter that is well drained. Useful as a ground cover or a cascading plant that will trail over rock walls or other landscape features. The cinnamon red stems have exfoliating bark, but are less noticeable with the brightly colored berries. One plant will be 8-10 inches tall and can spread to 4-6ft. Draught tolerant. Hardy to zone 3. When the leaves or berries are crushed, there is a strong smell of wintergreen, a fragrance used in toothpaste and some gum.
